In this life, it’s easy to get caught up in the uncertainties of the future. The “what-ifs” can flood our minds, leaving us anxious and drained. What if my child gets hurt? What if my plans fail? What if I mess up? These questions often chain us to fear rather than faith. But God invites us to a different way of living—a way that focuses on what He offers us for today.
When Jesus taught His disciples to pray (in what we know as the Lord’s Prayer), He included these simple yet impactful words: “Give us today our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). Not “tomorrow’s bread” or “next week’s bread,” but today’s. This request reminds us God provides us with just what we need, exactly when we need it.
The Gift of “Enough”
We live in a society that constantly pushes us toward having more — more stuff, more plans, more control. Yet, in God’s economy, “more” isn’t always better. Instead, He promises “enough.” Each day, He supplies us with enough strength, enough grace, enough wisdom to get through the moments before us right now.
Just as the Israelites received manna in the wilderness—a daily supply that spoiled if hoarded—we, too, are called to rely on God daily. He sustains us, not with an overflow of stuff for the future, but with precisely what we need for each moment. Why? Because this keeps us close to Him. It keeps us dependent, humble, and in a close relationship with The Provider. It allows us to embrace each day as a gift and rely on His promise to sustain us.
Focus on Today, Not Tomorrow
Jesus said, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34). I have found that anxiety often comes when we try to live in the future, but God’s grace is available right now. He knows that if we focus on today, we are better equipped to meet life’s challenges with faith rather than fear. Focusing on the present doesn’t mean we neglect planning for future, but it does mean we trust God with the outcome.
Trusting The Giver
When we ask for our “daily bread,” we acknowledge that all we have comes from God’s hand. We acknowledge our dependence on Him. And in that reliance, there’s humility in knowing that we must trust God and release the weight of the unknown and lean into the certainty of His love.God sustains us day by day because He wants us to trust Him day by day. Our future isn’t held together by our plans; it’s held by His faithfulness.
