Parenting Like God

parenting-like-godTrain up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6.

Train up a child in the way he should go? What does that mean? How does one do this, ensuring that their child will grow up to love the Lord, follow Him, be a productive member of society, and raise more children in the same way?

I know someday my husband and I will not be here to help our fearfully and wonderfully made girl. It is important that we train her now to listen to God’s instruction and rely upon Him in her times of need. Then we can be assured, when she is older, she will not turn from Him but find courage and comfort in all the situations of life, including the messy ones.

But how are we going to do this?

Have you seen what Satan will throw at my child, to keep her from the above results?

He will try to tempt, lure, impress, and do all he can to lead her away from Christ.

How am I going to train up a child in a way that leads her to righteousness?

How are you going to do the same for your children?

I would like to offer you, a parent just like me, some insight into training up a child after God’s own example. I certainly don’t have this parenting thing down perfect, but I and others have studied events in the Bible where God parents His children. We have taken those moments, drawn out the parenting characteristics God exemplifies, and are now applying them to our own journeys of parenthood. The results have been blessings, and we want to share them with you!

I want you to join us. There is no better way to parent than after God’s own example! But, I must warn you as well. I am discovering parenting as God does is not easy, any less tiring, or packaged with 100% guarantees.

Many promises are found in the Bible, but Proverbs 22:6 is not one. Proverbs are bits of wisdom, not promises.

Parents can raise their children in God’s light, but the child might still make poor decisions. Decisions that lead to messes parents cannot clean up. This is a fallen world, and Satan can take hold of our children. If this is currently happening with your child, keep pursuing them as God does us! Keep training and instructing! The prayers of a parent never end, and God’s love always abounds.

Proverbs 22:6 might not be a guarantee, but it is certainly godly wisdom parents need to follow. Training our children to love and have a relationship with the Lord increases their likelihood of not turning from Him.

Though it will not be easy, it will be rewarding as we and God parent together.

Whether you do not yet have children, your children are grown, or you are currently in the middle of parenting through the toddler and teenager years, stick with me and other women writers this week as we dig into the Word and learn to parent like God does! {Tweet This}

    This is a verse that’s always at the forefront of my mind. Thank goodness for the wisdom of the one Parent who truly DOES know everything and who can help us along our imperfect way. I love that you reminded us that the Proverbs are not promises, but wisdom!
