While completing the study, The Armor of God by Priscilla Shirer, Shirer wanted the reader to think of a person that has peace. The kind of peace that only God can provide, can be seen in this person.
I instantly thought of Grandma Bernice, my 83 year old grandmother.
Next, Shirer wanted the reader to record insights on this person.
What makes God’s peace visible in Grandma? How does Grandma have such peace?
This is what I reflected upon as I thought of her:
- Age is just a number when it comes to thirsting for more of God.
Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble. Psalm 119:165
Grandma still attends Bible studies, Sunday school, church and other Christ related functions that will grow and bless her spiritual life. She does not think that because she is 83, she has learned all she will from Him, or will never get closer to the Lord. She loves the Lord and His law. She is constantly striving to know her God better!
- She does less talking and more listening.
And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. Isaiah 32:17
When I am discussing something that troubles me, Grandma listens attentively and rarely interjects. The questions she does ask are wise and used as a means to better understand what I am describing. This allows her to offer godly wisdom in the best way possible.
She does not need to do a lot of talking; her quietness reflects the trust she Has in God to handle any situation. {Click Here to Tweet This Sentence}

Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. Psalm 34:14
Grandma is consistently making food to take to someone. She writes cards of thank you and encouragement to send in the mail. She hems, irons, and sews the clothes of others- for free. She enjoys the action of gifting! She pursues peace, wanting to create new friendships, and sustain old ones through her giving.
- She draws nearer to God in the midst of turmoil and tragedy.
The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace. Psalm 29:11
I’ve seen Grandma weep beside caskets and grieve for those she loves who have made bad decisions. Yet, divine peace is still reflected in her tears. Such events do not separate her from God, they only bring her closer. The peace she carries, surrounds her during these difficult times. It is a peace that gives her strength.
- She adorns her house with reminders of Him.
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Isaiah 26:3
Her Bible is always visible. Christian books line her shelves, and scripture or references to God hang on the walls. She keeps Him within her fading eyesight and a hand’s reach away. Her mind is steadfast and focused on the Holy One. The result is peace. {Click Here to Tweet These Last 2 Sentences}

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 1 Timothy 2: 1-2
I wish I knew the number of times Grandma has said to me, “I will pray about that for you, Keri.” In her home, every meal begins with a blessing. She prays often, with thanksgiving and petitions for all people.

You know how I am certain that she carries this wonderful and blessed peace within her?
God continues to use her for His glory.
He is using her, to show me and others, what we need to be doing to activate and sustain our own Divine peace that only He can provide. What a legacy she will leave on this earth, just by witnessing the peace she carries!
